Minimum Wage Increase for the Hair and Beauty Industry

As was announced by the Fair Work Commission back in June 2021, the National Minimum Wage was due to increase by 2.5%. Although increases to the minimum wage typically occur on 1 July to coincide with the start of the Australian financial year, given the continuing difficulties with the COVID-19 outbreak in Australia for a variety of industries, for the past two years the Fair Work Commission has taken a different approach in staggering the dates these are due to come into effect depending on the industry sector and the impact COVID-19 had on that sector.

During the 2021 wage increase, it was confirmed that the increase would occur in 3 staggered groups, with the Wage Increase of 2.5% for Group 3 to come into effect from the 1st November 2021.

For employers covered by the Hair and Beauty Industry Award 2020 and their employees, these businesses were part of the group 3 increases. Increases for employees in this industry will be effective from the first full pay period on or after the 1st November 2021.

This means that businesses in this final group should now be preparing for the increase for their employees to come into effect. An updated pay guide is now available, and published by the Fair Work Ombudsman.  Click here.

You can also download a copy of The Hair and Beauty Industry Award Pay Guide on this page.

Employers should also notify their employees of the increase to their wages and when this is effective from.
