Arthrex Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) harnesses the body’s own healing and regeneration processes with a medicinal effect that originates from a multitude of growth factors and signaling molecules. [1]
Platelets play a central role in wound healing and regeneration. [2,3] They contain a variety of growth factors such as PDGF, TGF-ß, VEGF, and EGF, which are released following activation. [2,3]
PRP has been clinically validated and established as a treatment concept in a wide variety of medical disciplines for a long time.4-9 PRP particularly appeals to patients looking for result without the use of foreign substances such as botulinum toxin or hyaluronic acid. [10-12]
Skin Rejuvenation
PRP can be injected intradermally. The regeneration process is initiated by the release of growth factors following the endogenic activation of platelets. PRP stimulates the breakdown of sun-damaged elements of the extracellular matrix and induces the synthesis of collagen. [13, 14] A significant improvement in skin elasticity has been reported in a number of studies as a direct result. [15] It has also proved possible to demonstrate a considerably higher quantity and size of collagen bundles. [15] The synthesis of hyaluronic acid stimulated by PRP has additionally been shown to produce a volume effect and enhance skin turgor.[15]
Androgenetic Alopecia and Alopecia Areata
PRP injected into the scalp is a treatment option for hair loss (androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata). PRP stimulates the proliferation and differentiation of stem cells in hair follicles. [16, 17] The growth factor VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) triggers neoangiogenesis and stimulates the blood supply to the hair follicles. In addition, the dormant hair follicles are stimulated by the growth factors released. Clinical studies have shown a significant increase in the diameter and thickness of the hair. [18-21]
